Are hunting blinds worth it? ›

Ground blinds can be very effective just about anywhere if they are set up right. Deer, like humans, prefer the path of least resistance. For this reason, when choosing a spot to set your blind up, you need to think funnels.

Spook deer one time getting into or out of a blind, and the effectiveness of that blind could be tarnished for a week or more.

A blind is likely an unfamiliar object to a deer, which is reason enough to avoid traveling in that area. Deer and other animals need time to get used to it, so set it up well before the season begins — three to six weeks should be ample time.

Avoid buying a blind larger than you need, as you'll appear more conspicuous to your prey. If you primarily hunt alone, hunting blinds intended to fit one person don't need to be much larger than 4'x4' or 4'x5'.

To help minimize movement, the hunter should wear black clothing on the upper body, hands, and head. By wearing black, the hunter blends with the interior of the blind, keeping them more concealed. If you leave all eight windows uncovered, you can swing around in your Captain's Chair and have a clear shot from every angle. It doesn't matter what side of the blind the deer approaches from, you'll be able to follow it around the entire blind, with a clear shot the whole way.
